چکیده

The effect of rhythmic passive flexion of the foot on femoral vein blood volume flow rate has been investigated in 11 patients undergoing surgery for varicose veins. With rates of flexion varying from 24 to 50 per minute and with amplitudes varying from 20 degrees to 50 degrees it has been shown that the peak femoral vein flow can be increased to twice its normal value and that its pulsatility can be increased elevenfold. These increases are proportional to both the rate and the amplitude of the flexion, the maximum occurring, theoretically, when the foot is flexed +/-28 degrees about a line perpendicular to the leg.The investigation has further shown that the effects of sustained passive flexion are maintained, without appreciable dimunition, for 30 minutes and that the maximum increases are produced in those patients who have the lowest resting flows. It is suggested that per-operative passive flexion of the feet may be a good prophylactic against postoperative deep vein thrombosis.

Prevention of early postoperative deep vein thrombosis by passive exercise of leg during surgery.

A clinical trial assessed the effect of passive exercise of the lower limb during surgery on the incidence of early postoperative deep vein thrombosis. Thrombosis was diagnosed by means of the (125)I-fibrinogen uptake test. Passive exercise of the lower limb during the operation was achieved by using a motorized foot mover designed for use on supine subjects, and by pedalling only one leg each ...

The relationship of foot and ankle movements to venous return in the lower limb.

We have studied the relationship between movements of the foot and ankle and venous blood flow from the lower limb using colourflow Duplex ultrasound to determine the optimum type of exercise for promoting venous return. Studies of both active and passive movements were carried out on 40 limbs in 20 subjects (18 men; 2 women), with a median age of 27 years (20 to 54). We assessed ankle dorsifle...

What Effect Do Intermittent Compression Systems Have on Venous Blood Flow Velocity

Intermittent compression systems augment blood flow in proximal veins for a short time, while they compress. The size, duration, and profile of that augmentation will be dependent on the particular compression system that is used. Changes have been observed in the femoral vein, as a result of calf and thigh compression, and of foot compression; in the popliteal vein due to calf compression, and...

Venous haemodynamics after total knee arthroplasty: evaluation of active dorsal to plantar flexion and several mechanical compression devices.

We performed a crossover study to evaluate the haemodynamic effect of active dorsal to plantar flexion and seven pneumatic compression devices in ten patients who had a total knee arthroplasty. Using the Acuson 128XP/10 duplex ultrasound unit with a 5MHz linear array probe, we assessed the augmentation of peak venous velocity and venous volume above and below the junction of the greater sapheno...

Effects of joint alignment and type on mechanical properties of thermoplastic articulated ankle-foot orthosis.

BACKGROUND Articulated or hinged ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) allow more range of motion. However, quantitative investigation on articulated AFO is still sparse. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to quantitatively investigate effects of alignment and joint types on mechanical properties of the thermoplastic articulated AFO. STUDY DESIGN Tamarack dorsiflexion assist flexure joints with t...
